uPVC Performance at the Edge of the World
For more than 25 years, NK Windows has been a leader in uPVC window and door manufacturing in New Zealand, delivering comfort, performance, and energy efficiency to homes nationwide. Less well known is the company’s work designing and supplying some of the world’s most specialised window systems for Scott Base, Antarctica, one of the most demanding environments on earth.

For nearly 15 years, NK Windows has manufactured and supplied custom uPVC systems to Scott Base. Projects commissioned by Antarctica New Zealand and its engineering partners demand exceptional technical performance, precision manufacturing, and absolute reliability.
“Our systems are specified because they deliver superior thermal efficiency and durability — ideally suited to the extreme conditions of Antarctica,” says Martin Ball, Director, NK Windows. “But it’s also our willingness to customise, to design for the impossible, that really sets us apart.”
The key to NK Windows’ success in such a hostile climate lies in the advanced German engineering of aluplast profiles. Their multi-chambered design traps layers of still air within the frame to minimise heat transfer, while high-performance insulation and galvanised-steel reinforcement ensure structural stability even under Antarctic gales and sub-zero conditions. Together, these features maintain stable indoor temperatures, a critical advantage when it’s nearly minus 50 °C outside.
Recent Antarctic work has included transportable scientific huts and upgrades within Scott Base, replacing ageing windows and doors with high-performance uPVC systems. One demanding brief involved a scientific hut at the South Pole used for geomagnetic research, where no metal components could be used to prevent interference with sensitive instruments.
“Everything was prefabricated in Christchurch and shipped south,” explains Ball. “There’s no margin for error — materials must perform perfectly the first time, and as most maintenance can only occur during their short summer season, we have strict production schedules to meet.”
NK Windows has always specialised exclusively in uPVC, transitioning to aluplast profiles in 2015. The partnership has flourished on shared values and a common pursuit of technical excellence.
“aluplast understood the flexibility we needed and were willing to customise for the New Zealand market,” Ball says. “Even though our volumes are small compared with Europe and many of their other markets, we’re treated as a valued partner. Their profiles perform flawlessly — even at the South Pole.”
Profiles are shipped directly from Germany with a three-to-four-month lead time, ensuring full traceability and consistent quality.
Founded 25 years ago by an Austrian couple who recognised the benefits of European-style uPVC systems, NK Windows remains true to its origins. When Martin Ball and his wife acquired the company in 2013, they guided it through post-earthquake growth in Christchurch, expanding from primarily retrofit projects to an increasing share of new builds.
Now part-owned by Altus, the company continues to focus on high-performance, low-maintenance solutions. Around two-thirds of its work remains residential renovations, reflecting its strong connection with homeowners seeking greater comfort and energy efficiency.

While Antarctic projects demonstrate NK’s engineering capability, the company is equally driven to lift performance standards in New Zealand housing. “Every major bank now offers green loans,” says Ball. “Homeowners are realising that better windows mean lower energy bills, greater comfort, and healthier living. What surprises me is that real-estate agents don’t promote this more — energy efficiency should be a major selling point.”
New Zealand’s minimum R-values still lag behind those in the UK, where uPVC became mainstream more than 40 years ago. “Education, regulation and awareness are all driving change,” Ball adds. “Our role is to help homeowners understand that high-performance windows aren’t a luxury — they’re essential for comfortable, healthy living.”
From Antarctic research stations to family homes across New Zealand, NK Windows continues to prove the durability, comfort, and energy efficiency of aluplast’s advanced uPVC technology. Each project, no matter how remote, reinforces the company’s belief that every home deserves the same level of performance demanded by Scott Base.
